Inheritance tax thresholds, probate and power-of-attorney fees, the State Pension, care and funeral costs — every figure with its source beside it and the date we last confirmed it. Statutory figures are checked against GOV.UK; care and funeral costs are market averages.
Figures are informational, not advice, and apply to England & Wales unless noted. Always confirm against the linked GOV.UK page before acting.
§1Common questions
UK estate figures, answered.
The inheritance tax nil-rate band is £325,000.
It is frozen until April 2031. A residence nil-rate band of up to £175,000 can apply on top when a home passes to direct descendants.
Inheritance tax is charged at 40% on the value of an estate above the available thresholds.
The rate falls to 36% if at least 10% of the net estate is left to charity. Around 4% of estates pay any inheritance tax.
It costs £92 to register each lasting power of attorney (LPA) with the Office of the Public Guardian.
A reduction or exemption is available if the donor is on a low income or receives certain means-tested benefits.
The probate application fee is £526 for estates worth more than £5,000.
A grant of probate typically takes 4–12 weeks once a complete application is submitted.
The full new State Pension is £241.30 a week (2026-27). It is uprated each April under the triple lock.
You can give away £3,000 each tax year free of inheritance tax (the annual exemption), plus any number of small gifts of up to £250 per person per year.

This guide is free, and it stays free. The Household Continuity Dossier renders your household's own version — your people, your accounts, your wishes — into a maintained record your executor or trusted person will actually reach for, kept current every year.
We'd like to use analytics — PostHog, an EU-hosted service — to see which pages actually help people. Nothing runs until you choose, and it never carries adverts. Anonymous error reports go to our error-monitoring processor either way, so we can fix what breaks. Privacy
