§1What drives the cost

Most of the cost is the funeral director's fees and the cremation or burial charge — not flowers.

A typical funeral bill has three main components: the funeral director's professional fee (conducting arrangements, transportation, preparation), the disbursements (cremation or burial fee, doctor's certificates, minister's fee), and additional choices (flowers, coffin upgrade, catering, memorial).

The biggest single variable is often the coffin — prices range from a few hundred to several thousand pounds. Regional differences are also significant: London funerals tend to cost 20–30% more than the UK average.

Direct cremationNo service. Body collected and cremated. Ashes returned.£900 – £1,500
Simple cremation + serviceShort service at crematorium. Standard coffin included.~£3,518
Traditional burial + serviceService, burial plot, headstone. Highest regional variation.£7,000 – £12,000+
Why recorded wishes matter

Families who have a written record of the person's wishes — type of funeral, preferred funeral director, music, flowers, what to do with ashes — make faster decisions and are less likely to overspend under time pressure.

A formal Funeral Wishes document reduces both family conflict and unnecessary cost. Valoren's free Funeral Wishes Worksheet is one way to record it before it's needed.

§2Common questions

Funeral costs, answered.

The average cost of a funeral with a cremation and a service is around £3,518. A direct burial (no service at the graveside) averages around £4,002.

Costs vary significantly by region, funeral director, and the choices made — a full-service traditional funeral with a burial can exceed £10,000.

A direct cremation — where the body is cremated without a funeral service — is typically the lowest-cost option, often ranging from £900 to £1,500.

A simple cremation with a short service averages around £3,518.

In contrast, a traditional burial with a service and headstone can cost £7,000–£12,000.

Yes. The Funeral Expenses Payment from the DWP can help if you are on certain means-tested benefits (such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, or Income Support).

It covers some costs but rarely the full amount. The Social Fund may also help in limited circumstances.

Local councils sometimes provide a simple funeral at public expense if no one else can pay.

A prepaid funeral plan lets you pay for your funeral now at today's prices, with a regulated provider.

Since July 2022, all prepaid funeral plans in the UK must be regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

They are not the same as funeral savings — the money is held in a trust or insurance policy, not accessible before death.

The most effective approach is a written statement held alongside your will — or, better, a formal Funeral Wishes document that names who to contact, preferred funeral director, cremation or burial preference, service type, music, flowers, and what to do with ashes.

Your executor is not legally required to follow your wishes, but they almost always do when they are clearly written and easily found.
