Pre-event · Adult children with ageing parents

Most families don't sort a parent's LPA until a crisis forces it.

We prepare it with you, personally, within one business day.

Core document

specimen · fictional household — the Pemberton-Walsh household is invented; every page is the production builder's real output.

§I

The conversation your family has been putting off.

The most expensive failure in adult-child / ageing-parent households is the conversation that never happens.

An LPA not registered in time. A pension nomination never updated after a divorce, forty years ago.

A care preference never written down that a family discovers only during a hospital admission, when a rushed decision must be made from fragments. A Carer's Allowance claim never made — worth over £4,000 a year — because no one formalised the arrangement.

This document does not eliminate these conversations — it gives them a structure, a starting point, and a written record.

§II

What is included.

1 document · 12 sections

One document, prepared as a single PDF. Structured into the twelve sections below, so each part of the conversation has its own place.

Early warning signs — when to actRECOGNISE THE SIGNS
The specific memory, money, and self-care signs that tell a family it's time to act — not wait for a crisis.
Lasting Power of Attorney — if one existsACTIVATING IT
How to confirm an LPA is registered with the Office of the Public Guardian — £92 per registration — and what it takes to activate it with banks, GPs, and hospitals.
When there is no LPA — the Court of Protection routeDEPUTYSHIP
What a Court of Protection deputyship costs — £432 — and how it compares with having arranged an LPA in advance.
Banking — the institutional frictionBANKING ACCESS
Setting up third-party mandates, working with a bank's vulnerable-customer team, and what a joint account means for survivorship and Inheritance Tax.
NHS, GP, and consultant accessNHS & GP ACCESS
Getting recorded as your parent's carer on their GP record, and what the NHS Continuing Healthcare assessment actually covers.
Benefits and allowances — the family often misses theseUNCLAIMED MONEY
Attendance Allowance, Carer's Allowance, and two Council Tax reductions families are entitled to and routinely never claim.
Care — at home, then perhaps a care homeCARE FUNDING
The free local-authority needs assessment, the £23,250 means-test threshold, and the four ways a care home placement can be funded.
Property — house decisionsTHE HOUSE
Insuring an empty property, weighing sale against rent against holding it, and the deprivation-of-assets rule — which carries no time limit.
Siblings — coordination, not conflictSIBLINGS
A monthly update rhythm for siblings, how joint LPA attorneys are structured, and what to do when a disagreement needs mediation.
When you have done everything right — preparing for what followsWHAT COMES NEXT
What to have in place for whoever acts after your parent dies — letters ready to send, a will confirmed current, and the next steps to take.
Jurisdictional differences — Scotland and Northern IrelandSCOTLAND & NI
The Scottish and Northern Irish equivalents of LPA — Continuing Power of Attorney and Enduring Power of Attorney — and where each is registered.
What you must NOT doSAFEGUARDING
The lines that turn well-meant help into financial abuse — using a parent's banking credentials, moving assets "for tax planning", delaying registration too long.
A man at a desk in the evening, reading through his parent's papers beside an open laptop.
What this spares your family

Capacity is a one-way door — the route that is simple while your parent can choose closes the moment it is lost.

£92
Per LPA · £184 for both · registered while they can choose

A Lasting Power of Attorney is made and registered while your parent still has capacity — the Office of the Public Guardian fee is £92 to register each LPA, £184 for both types.

Remission or exemption can apply on a low income or means-tested benefits.

£432
Court of Protection · the later route

If capacity is lost first, the only route is a Court of Protection deputyship — the application fee is £432 (plus a £100 assessment for new deputies), and it is slower, supervised, and decided by a court rather than by your parent.

Theirs
The part only they can give

Who acts for them is a choice only your parent can make, and only while they still can.

Acting early is the one window in which the decision stays fully theirs.

The calmest version of this is the one prepared together, while there is still time to choose it.

Why £79?

A private care consultant's initial assessment
£200–400
A solicitor's consultation on LPA and care planning
£250–500

A social worker's carers assessment — free but takes months; covers needs not planning

A personally-prepared document pack covering the planning conversations your family needs to have, delivered within one business day.

£79

Nothing you start with is wasted. The £79 counts in full toward anything more expensive for 30 days — £79 off the £179 Executor’s First Hour, or off the Household Continuity Dossier’s first year. Use the same email at checkout and it applies automatically.

Start free if you would rather. Supporting a Parent covers the same ground without charge, and the LPA readiness check tells you whether an LPA is the missing piece before you spend anything — both free, no account.

Your council’s carers assessment is free too, as the table above says. What £79 adds is a prepared pack, written from your answers within one business day: the conversations to have, in what order, against your parent’s position rather than the general case.

Boundary

This document provides structured information to help you understand a planning process. It does not constitute legal, tax, financial, medical, or care advice.

For advice specific to your parent's circumstances, consult a qualified solicitor, GP, or care professional. LPA registration should be completed while your parent has legal capacity; if you are concerned about current capacity, speak to a solicitor before attempting to register.

The broader system
The planning conversation is one part of a larger record.

Caring for a Parent covers the conversations to have now. Valoren's estate planning system covers the records those conversations produce — so the people who need to act can find what they need, when they need it.
