Who to notify when someone dies, and in what order

Two services tell several organisations at once. Everything else has to be told one by one. This page lists them by category, with each organisation's own bereavement line and the date we last read its page. No account required.

PDF · A4 · No account · A blank you fill in yourself — not legal advice

A starting point, not legal advice. Bereavement routes, thresholds and deadlines change. Every organisation named here links to its own page, and carries the date that page was read. Check the figure at source before you rely on it. Rules differ across England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland — §4 sets out where.

The checklist

The organisations are printed. The answers are yours to write. Every row carries the organisation's own bereavement route and the date we last read its page. The date-told, reference and who-I-spoke-to columns are blank. Nothing in it is filled in for you — it is the same sheet for everyone.

Who to notify when someone dies

Nine A4 pages. A one-page tick sheet you can print on its own, then five category pages — government, banks and building societies, insurers and pensions, home and utilities, telecoms and digital — and a page of blank lines for the ones only you know about. Each page has a date column. The last page names every source; each institution's own date is printed against its row.

Rather have the link by email? One email, the link back to this page, nothing else.

A blank record sheet. Not legal advice. Checked against each organisation's own page — dates printed on every row.

The two services that tell several at once

Start with the two services that notify several organisations at once. They save the most calls for the least effort. Tell Us Once covers government. The Death Notification Service covers many banks and building societies. Neither of them closes anything. Both of them leave most of your list untouched.

The thing most people get wrong

Tell Us Once reaches government. It does not reach your money. It notifies HMRC, DWP, the Passport Office, the DVLA, the council, Veterans UK and Social Security Scotland. It does not reach banks, building societies, insurers, utilities or telecoms. Those still have to be told one by one.

This is the single most common misunderstanding about the service. People use it, tick it off, and assume the notifying is done. Weeks later the direct debits are still running and the bank has not been told.

The Death Notification Service closes part of that gap. One free submission reaches every participating bank and building society. But it notifies; it does not close anything. No account is frozen, no balance released, no policy cancelled. Each institution then contacts you, and the rest of the work is the same work.

There is also no Tell Us Once if the person lived in Northern Ireland, or lived abroad permanently when they died. In Northern Ireland the equivalent is the Bereavement Service on 0800 085 2463 — one call that forwards the details to any department that paid them benefits.

gov.uk and deathnotificationservice.co.uk, read 11 September 2026. Northern Ireland number per communities-ni.gov.uk, read 11 September 2026.

The deadlines that bind, and the four nations

Most of this list has no deadline. A few parts of it do. Registration comes first, because almost nothing else moves without a death certificate. After that, three deadlines cost real money if they pass: the Tell Us Once window, the Bereavement Support Payment claim, and Inheritance Tax.

The deadlines that actually bind

Banks and building societies

Every bank sets its own figure for when it will want the grant. There is no statutory threshold. Each one decides for itself what it will release without a grant of probate, based on its own risk policy. Several publish no figure at all and decide case by case. That is why two banks holding similar balances can behave completely differently.

Each row read from the institution's own bereavement page. The date against each row is the date that page was read.

The full threshold picture, with every bank we have checked, is at bank bereavement thresholds. If the account is with a building society, you will be asked for a roll number, not an account number.

Notifying is not releasing

You do not need the grant to tell anybody. Notifying an organisation never requires a grant of probate. You can tell every bank, insurer, utility and provider on this page that someone has died, today. They will freeze the account, stop the marketing, and start their own internal process.

What needs the grant is releasing money above the institution's own figure, and transferring anything. Those are different acts, and they come later.

So the sequence that works is this. Notify early and widely. Several organisations will tell you at that point exactly what they will want later, which is worth knowing before you need it. Then go back with the grant only where the balance actually requires one.

One thing is usually possible straight away without a grant: most banks will pay the funeral director's invoice directly from the deceased's account on sight of the invoice and the death certificate, even while the account is otherwise frozen. Nobody in the family needs to be out of pocket for that.

gov.uk and each institution's own page, read as dated in §5.

Insurers, pensions and investment platforms

Tell Us Once does not reach a single private pension or insurer. Each one has to be told separately. This matters more than it sounds. A pension scheme pays out according to the member's expression of wishes — but only if the scheme knows the member has died. A life policy written in trust pays the beneficiaries directly, outside the estate, and nothing happens until somebody claims.

Insurers, pension providers and investment platforms

Bereavement routes read from each provider's own page, and the small-estate figure each platform publishes. An empty figure cell means none is published.

Home, utilities and telecoms

None of this affects the estate. All of it generates post. Utilities, water and telecoms hold no meaningful money and change nothing about the estate's value. They are on the list for a different reason: an organisation that has not been told keeps billing, keeps writing, and keeps addressing letters to somebody who has died. That lands on whoever opens the post, often for months.

This is the part of the list most easily shared out. It needs no legal standing and no grant — only the account number and a phone call.

If the property will sit empty, tell the home insurer. Many policies restrict or withdraw cover after a period of unoccupancy — commonly quoted as 30 days, though the period is set by each policy, not by any rule. Read the policy or ask the insurer directly rather than assuming a figure.

Also link: council tax after a death.

What to say when you ring

Four facts get you through almost every call. The full name of the person who died. Their date of death. Their address. An account or policy number, if you have one. Then say who you are and how you are connected — executor, administrator, next of kin, or a relative acting for the family.

Ask two things before you hang up. What they need from you next, in writing if they can. And their reference number for the case. The second call is always easier than the first if you have it.

Nobody expects you to have the estate straight at this stage. Bereavement teams do this every day, and they are usually the most patient department in the organisation.

Have to hand

The death certificate, and several certified copies — most organisations will not accept a photocopy
Their National Insurance number
Their NHS number
Dates of birth and marriage or civil partnership
Any Child Benefit or tax reference
The Tell Us Once reference from the registrar
Account, policy and membership numbers as you find them

How many certificates: order several at registration. Banks, insurers, pension providers and solicitors will each usually want an original certified copy, and they do not agree with one another about it. Ordering later costs more in Northern Ireland — £8.00 each at registration against £15.00 for the first copy afterwards.

The accounts that hold no money

Some of the list is not about money at all. It is about stopping things. Email, photos, a streaming subscription, a credit file, a TV licence, a driving licence. None of it changes the estate's value. All of it keeps running, keeps charging, or keeps the person visible online until somebody says otherwise.

This page is the order. The directory is the detail. Every organisation named here has its own entry in our bereavement contacts directory — the route it publishes, the documents it will ask for, the channel it actually wants, and the date we last read its page.

The probate forms you may need are indexed at the UK probate forms index, and the fee position is modelled at the probate cost calculator.

§12

Questions, answered plainly

Only the ones holding something affect the estate — accounts, policies, pensions, investments. Those establish what the estate is worth, and they are the ones a grant is eventually shown to.

There is a second reason to tell the rest, and it is not financial. An organisation that has not been told keeps writing, keeps charging, and keeps addressing letters to somebody who has died. Telling a subscription service adds nothing to the estate accounts and removes a small recurring cruelty. It is also the part of the list most easily shared out among the family.
More than one, because the organisations do not agree with each other. Banks, insurers, pension providers and solicitors will each usually want an original certified copy, and most will not accept a photocopy.

Order several at registration. In England and Wales a certified copy is £12.50. In Northern Ireland it is £8.00 per copy at registration, but £15.00 for the first copy if you order later from GRONI — so the cost of under-ordering is real. Check the Scottish fee at National Records of Scotland.
Yes — notifying never needs a grant. You can tell every bank, insurer, utility and provider on this page today. They will freeze the account, stop the marketing and start their own process.

What needs the grant is releasing money above the institution's own figure, and transferring anything. So notify early and widely, then go back with the grant only where the balance requires it. Most banks will also pay the funeral director's invoice directly from the account, on sight of the invoice and the death certificate, before any of that.
For most of the list, no. For four things, yes. Register the death within 5 days in England and Wales (from the medical examiner's confirmation), 8 days in Scotland, 5 days in Northern Ireland. Use Tell Us Once within 28 days of getting the reference from the registrar.

Claim Bereavement Support Payment within 3 months for the full award — after 12 months the one-off payment is gone, and after 21 months you usually cannot get any payment at all. Inheritance Tax is due by the end of the sixth month after the month of death, and interest runs after that.
First check they were actually told. The commonest cause is a notification that reached one department and not another — ring the bereavement route rather than the general customer line, and quote the reference from the first call.

If it is marketing rather than account correspondence, there is a separate route. The Bereavement Register — a free online registration — removes the name and address from marketing lists and stops most future advertising mail across many companies at once. Redirecting the post through Royal Mail catches what is left.
Tell Us Once is not available in Northern Ireland, and it is not available if the person lived abroad permanently when they died. In Northern Ireland the equivalent is the Bereavement Service on 0800 085 2463 — one point of contact that forwards the details to any department that paid them benefits.

The rest of this page applies unchanged. Registration is within 5 days of the death itself, with no medical-examiner gate, and certificate fees and probate thresholds differ — §4 sets out each one.
