| Phone (in a September 2025 blog post) | 0800 802 1281Monzo’s bereavement page lists only the form and the email address. A Monzo blog post dated 3 September 2025 gives this number (+44 203 872 0620 from abroad) and says to check monzo.com or the app for current information. Their fraud and money-worries pages also give it as a way to call Monzo |
Keep one line per call. If anything goes wrong later, this is what you will be asked for.
Letters to tell a bank, building society, insurer or pension provider about a death, ready to fill in. No account, no email needed.
A blank to fill in yourself. Not legal advice. Written for England and Wales.
Rather have it by email?
Take the notification letters with you.
We'll email you the notification letters as a PDF — for when you're at a printer, or to pass to the person who'll need it. The download above stays free either way.
Their page says they will get back to you within 3 business days to talk through next steps.
Anyone can tell Monzo about a death. To return any money held in the account, their support page says they need instructions from a solicitor, the executor of the will, or the next of kin. Their help article says the instructions can come from the next of kin or those representing them, such as a solicitor, executor of Probate, Administrator, Chartered Accountant or Probate Specialist. If you are under 16, their help article says that because of bank rules they can only talk about the account with an adult, so ask a parent, guardian or another trusted family member to contact them.
The only phone number we found for telling Monzo about a death is in a blog post dated 3 September 2025. The post says it was accurate when published and to check monzo.com or the Monzo app for current information. Their bereavement page, support page, help articles, FAQ and guide list only the form and the email address. The post also says customers can contact the team through the Monzo app. Monzo’s help centre gives a different number for general customer support, 0800 088 4040, and says it is only for customer support queries; we found no Monzo page saying that line takes bereavement notifications. The number in the post is also given on Monzo’s fraud and money-worries pages as a way to call Monzo, and its abroad number (+44 203 872 0620) is the one the help centre gives for customer support.
Their help article says you may not have everything when you first get in touch, and to share what you can.
The form asks you to verify your email first. Their help article says you can get the indemnity form when you complete the form. Their support page says they send it to you.
What they need before paying money out depends on the balance. Their support page says: under £100, your ID and the details of the bank account for the money; between £100 and £25,000, your ID and a signed indemnity form; over £25,000, your ID, a signed indemnity form, and a grant of probate or letters of administration. Their balance-transfer help article also asks for the bank details of the account to pay into when the balance is below £25,000 and when it is over £25,000, so have those ready whatever the balance.
Their page says the transfer usually takes 5 working days from the date they receive everything. Their balance-transfer help article says around 5 business days.
Funeral costs: if there is enough money in the account, they can pay the funeral director directly with a copy of the funeral invoice. Their help article says they cannot accept an estimate. If you paid for the funeral yourself, their page says they can pay you back from the balance, with the invoice and a bank statement showing your payment.
Joint accounts: you tell them in the same way. Their page says the money in a joint account belongs to the surviving holder, who moves it into their own Monzo account and switches Direct Debits and standing orders. Their joint account terms say the remaining holder can transfer the balance out of the joint account unless there is a legal or regulatory reason not to, and that Monzo closes the joint account once it is empty.
Savings Pots, including those opened with partner banks through Monzo, are closed and the money sent to the next of kin. Extra, Perks and Max plans are cancelled and any fees charged in error are corrected; their guide says that once that is done they can close the bank account.
Borrowing: their guide says a loan, overdraft or Flex account in the person’s name must be repaid if the estate has enough money. Their team discusses repayment and settlement options with you.
Investments, Stocks & Shares ISAs and Monzo Pensions are run with Seccl. Seccl needs an official physical copy of the death certificate by post (an interim or coroner’s certificate is fine, but not scans or photos). Monzo’s team gives you the postal address when you get in touch.
For investments and pensions they ask for a grant of probate or letters of administration if the total is over £20,000. Their guide says that for other Monzo accounts they usually only need these documents if the balance is more than £25,000. For a Monzo Pension they send a death benefit questionnaire to fill in and return as a scan.
A Cash ISA or Stocks & Shares ISA can stay open for up to 3 years and 1 day from the date of death, or until the estate is settled, or you can ask Monzo to close it. A spouse or civil partner who lived with the person may get an extra ISA allowance (an Additional Permitted Subscription).
If the adult main account holder dies, Monzo closes any linked Under 16s accounts. If the child has died, the adult can close the account in the app or email the team for help.
Business accounts can be reported in the same way.
Their support page points to the Death Notification Service as a way to notify several banks and building societies at the same time. The service’s own list of members does not include Monzo (see §7, “Who else to tell”).

Monzo is not on GOV.UK’s list of organisations Tell Us Once notifies.
Tell Us Once does not tell banks, mortgage providers, insurance providers, companies the person had contracts with (such as utility companies, landlords or housing associations), or personal or workplace pension schemes other than the public sector ones it contacts. GOV.UK says you will need to contact organisations like these yourself, and lists other things you may also need to do: update the property records if the person owned land or property; contact DVLA if they owned a vehicle and you sell it, or keep it and tax it in your own name; contact HMRC if they owed business taxes like VAT; contact the Student Loans Company if they had a student loan; and contact DWP if a child or baby has died and you get benefits as their parent or carer.
Tell Us Once is available only if the person was living in England, Scotland or Wales. GOV.UK says it cannot be used if the person was living in Northern Ireland when they died, or living abroad permanently when they died.

How Tell Us Once worksOne free online notification tells the member organisations you choose, at the same time.
Monzo is not on the Death Notification Service’s own list of members, so the service cannot tell Monzo for you. Read from its member list on 16 October 2026.
Notification only. Each member you choose updates its records and tells you the next steps. The service’s own FAQ says to expect that within 10 working days where a member holds a live account, and that a member holding no account will not write back.
