| British Sign Language | SignVideoTheir contact page says deaf or hard of hearing people who use British Sign Language can use SignVideo, which connects you to an interpreter, to call any of their phone numbers. | |
| Relay UK | Dial 18001, then 0800 068 2238Their accessibility page says that to use Relay UK on a textphone you dial 18001 and then the number you want to call. This applies that rule to the bereavement number: Barclays prints no Relay UK number of its own for this line. |
These products have their own teams and numbers. Where each number was read is in the Sources list at the foot of this page.
Keep one line per call. If anything goes wrong later, this is what you will be asked for.

We'll email you the notification letters as a PDF — for when you're at a printer, or to pass to the person who'll need it. The download above stays free either way.
You do not need the death certificate to start. Their online form lets you send the documents now or come back and add them later.
Their bereavement page does not say that only the executor can tell them.
They give you a bereavement reference number starting BRV. Quote it every time you contact them.
They freeze sole accounts and cancel the Direct Debits, standing orders and cards on them. They stop post addressed to the person as quickly as they can, though some may still arrive in the meantime.
Barclays freezes sole accounts within 24 hours. Stopping post addressed to the person can take a few days. ISAs can be kept open for a maximum of three years from the date of death. If you ask to keep bonds or ISAs open and it has been more than 12 months since you completed the settlement details form, you need to complete a new one to say where to send the money.
On a joint account they remove the person’s name and the other account holders carry on using it as normal. They say you do not need probate for joint accounts.
Their support page says that if the person had loans, overdrafts or a Barclaycard with them, they pay off what is owed from the current and savings accounts after allowing money for priority bills such as a funeral, then release what is left to the executor or administrator. If there is not enough, they may ask Phillips & Cohen, their bereavement partner, to work with the estate to pay off the debt. The same page says only the estate is responsible for the debt: if there is no money available, the executor or administrator will not be asked to cover what is owed by the person who died. For a loan in joint names, their main page says the remaining account holder becomes solely responsible for it, and that an overdraft on a joint account you become the sole holder of will now be in your name.
Money in the accounts can pay priority bills and the funeral, and they can refund a funeral you have already paid for. To pay bills, call 0800 068 2238 (option 2) with your BRV number. For the funeral, their support page says to show a certified copy of the death certificate and either an estimated invoice or the full balance from an itemised invoice on the funeral director’s headed paper, and to take it to a branch or send it to them with your BRV number. For a refund of a funeral you have already paid, show the final invoice and a receipt. They can pay the funeral director directly if the accounts have enough.
If a cheque arrives in the person’s name while the account is still open, write your BRV number on the back and post it to them at the PO Box address; after the accounts are closed, call the bereavement team and choose option 2.
ISAs can be kept open after the death (no new money can go in). A surviving spouse or civil partner can ask for an extra ISA allowance (APS). Any power of attorney on the account ends when the person dies.
To open an executor account, each executor or administrator goes to a branch with the grant of probate or letters of administration, proof of identity and proof of UK address. Their pages disagree on whether you must all attend the same appointment (see the conflicts on this page). Their executor-account page names only the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration and does not mention confirmation.
Mortgages: they write to you with the mortgage details and your options. A sole-name mortgage stays open with interest still charged, and the personal representatives have 12 months to repay it or tell Barclays what they plan to do with the property.
Business accounts: their page says the business banking team (and the Relationship Manager, if there is one) is told, and for sole business accounts they freeze the account and a team contacts you. Barclaycard and Wealth are told as part of the same notification, according to their FAQ.
If Barclays was named as the person’s executor, their first-steps page says to call the bereavement team on 0800 068 2238 as soon as possible.
If you want to speak to someone, call and choose option 2 (a dedicated bereavement adviser), or book a video call or branch appointment. If you have already told them, their page says not to book an appointment: call instead.
Barclays also mentions a grant in other cases. Where an investment account is in joint names, it freezes the account until you have a grant of probate. If someone who is not an executor or administrator has already claimed money from the accounts, it says it will ask you for a grant. For safe custody it says it might ask to see documents such as a grant of probate or letters of administration. To open an executor account you have to be named on the grant.

Barclays is not on GOV.UK’s list of organisations Tell Us Once notifies.
Tell Us Once does not tell banks, mortgage providers, insurance providers, companies the person had contracts with (such as utility companies, landlords or housing associations), or personal or workplace pension schemes other than the public sector ones it contacts. GOV.UK says you will need to contact organisations like these yourself, and lists other things you may also need to do: update the property records if the person owned land or property; contact DVLA if they owned a vehicle and you sell it, or keep it and tax it in your own name; contact HMRC if they owed business taxes like VAT; contact the Student Loans Company if they had a student loan; and contact DWP if a child or baby has died and you get benefits as their parent or carer.
Tell Us Once is available only if the person was living in England, Scotland or Wales. GOV.UK says it cannot be used if the person was living in Northern Ireland when they died, or living abroad permanently when they died.

How Tell Us Once worksOne free online notification tells the member organisations you choose, at the same time.
Barclays is on the Death Notification Service’s own list of members. Read from its member list on 16 October 2026.
Notification only. Each member you choose updates its records and tells you the next steps. The service’s own FAQ says to expect that within 10 working days where a member holds a live account, and that a member holding no account will not write back.
