| Relay UK | Add 18001 before the numberTheir Call us page says calls through Relay UK are welcome and to add 18001 before the number you need. It is on their general accessibility support, not a bereavement-only page. | |
| SignVideo | SignVideo (British Sign Language video call, on the Lloyds website)Their Call us page says SignVideo is also available if you are Deaf and use British Sign Language. It does not say this is specific to bereavement. |
These products have their own teams and numbers. Where each number was read is in the Sources list at the foot of this page.
Keep one line per call. If anything goes wrong later, this is what you will be asked for.

Anyone can tell Lloyds about a death. To deal with the accounts, you must be the next of kin, an executor of the will or a personal representative.
Their page says they need the death certificate and your proof of identity to review any accounts. In the video on the same page, Lloyds says it is important to let them know as soon as you can, and that you don’t need the official death certificate right away, but telling them early helps protect the accounts from potential fraud.
After you tell them, their page says they will explain the next steps whether or not there is a will, and tell you if probate is needed.
Branch visits: their bereavement page says what ID to bring if you visit a branch, but does not say you need to book. Their November 2023 guide says: if you need to come in and see them, you just need to call to book a time, and prints that beside 0800 015 0012. Their business bereavement page, in a section for personal accounts only, says that if you would like to make an appointment at your local branch you can call 0800 015 0012.
Sole accounts: their page says the accounts are frozen and cards and cheque books are cancelled. Money that arrives afterwards is returned to the sender. Standing orders and direct debits are stopped. They cannot stop subscription payments, so you must cancel those yourself. Their online bereavement service (we read its text from its code, as it runs by script) says that once you submit, the information is checked and verified, and when they are happy they freeze all of the person’s accounts, though joint accounts stay active for the remaining holder.
Statements and letters: their page says they stop sending statements and most letters once told. Some letters are produced up to 6 weeks ahead, so a few may still arrive. Letters about the bereavement go to the personal representative.
Joint accounts: their page says the accounts transfer to the remaining account holder and stay open. Standing orders and direct debits continue, and the remaining holder can ask for a list of payments to check.
Funeral and other bills: if there is money in the person’s account, Lloyds can pay the funeral directors straight from it when you give them the bill. Their page says this also applies to bills such as Inheritance Tax and probate.
Probate: their page says getting the grant back from the Probate Registry usually takes 8 to 16 weeks, and administering the estate can take 9 to 12 months, sometimes longer. If you are not sure whether you need probate, you can ring the bereavement number.
Other brands: Lloyds tells Halifax, Bank of Scotland, Scottish Widows, Clerical Medical, MBNA and Birmingham Midshires for you. Six other Lloyds Banking Group companies are not told, and their numbers are listed on this page under the teams for other products.
Mortgages: for a sole-name mortgage, their page says payments stay due but they do not expect you to make them for up to 18 months from the date of death, to give you time to get probate. The amount owed will increase and the mortgage will go into arrears, and they will write to tell you. You do not need to act on those letters. For a joint mortgage, payments continue and the mortgage usually moves to the remaining owner.
Debts: their page says personal debt in sole accounts can be paid from the estate and representatives are not personally liable for it. For a joint overdraft or loan, responsibility passes to the remaining account holder.
Power of attorney: their page on managing someone’s account says a power of attorney or representative access stops when the account holder dies, and the estate is then handled through their bereavement process.
Executor Account (optional): an executor can use it to collect money owed to the estate and pay estate bills. You first open a new Classic account, Easy Saver or Club Lloyds Advantage Saver, then ask to convert it with their online Executor Account request form. Their page says you will not be able to access funds in an Executor Account until the grant of probate has been received, but you may be able to access some funds before then to pay funeral and related expenses, Inheritance Tax and the probate fee.
Life insurance: Lloyds' life insurance page says that to start a life insurance or critical illness claim you use the online claim form on the Scottish Widows website, and Scottish Widows handles the claim.
Their online form has a screen for a person it does not recognise as a regulated solicitor or third party. It says: “To continue to use our registration service you need to write to us at the address shown below.” It asks for a Letter of Authority signed by the deceased’s executor or legal next of kin, a certified copy of the ID and a copy of the death certificate, and prints Lloyds Banking Group, Bereaved Service Centre, The Green Building, Kirkstall Road, Leeds, LS78 1LB and, if overseas, Bereavement Unit, Lloyds Banking Group, 5th Floor, 11 Portland Street, Manchester, M1 3HU. We read this text from the form’s code, as it runs by script, and could not see when it is shown.
To find out if a grant is needed, their page gives: Probate England and Wales, call 0300 303 0648 or visit gov.uk/applying-for-probate; Probate Northern Ireland, visit probate | nidirect; Confirmation in Scotland, call 0131 444 3300 or visit mygov.scot/confirmation.

Lloyds is not on GOV.UK’s list of organisations Tell Us Once notifies.
Tell Us Once does not tell banks, mortgage providers, insurance providers, companies the person had contracts with (such as utility companies, landlords or housing associations), or personal or workplace pension schemes other than the public sector ones it contacts. GOV.UK says you will need to contact organisations like these yourself, and lists other things you may also need to do: update the property records if the person owned land or property; contact DVLA if they owned a vehicle and you sell it, or keep it and tax it in your own name; contact HMRC if they owed business taxes like VAT; contact the Student Loans Company if they had a student loan; and contact DWP if a child or baby has died and you get benefits as their parent or carer.
Tell Us Once is available only if the person was living in England, Scotland or Wales. GOV.UK says it cannot be used if the person was living in Northern Ireland when they died, or living abroad permanently when they died.

How Tell Us Once worksOne free online notification tells the member organisations you choose, at the same time.
Lloyds is on the Death Notification Service’s own list of members. Read from its member list on 16 October 2026.
Notification only. Each member you choose updates its records and tells you the next steps. The service’s own FAQ says to expect that within 10 working days where a member holds a live account, and that a member holding no account will not write back.
