| Online | Online form (the “Complete our online form” link on their bereavement page). Their online form first asks who you are and says: “Only those directly responsible should continue the form.” (read on the form’s first screen in a browser, 16 October 2026) | |
| Live chat | Mon - Fri: 8am - 8pm, Sat: 9am - 5pmA general contact route: their bereavement page’s 'How to let us know' gives the online form and the phone call. Their contact page says the quickest way to reach them is to chat online. Their help article on the wrong name on a bill lists a bereavement among its cases and says to chat to them to update the account. Their bereavement form links to this contact page ('get in contact') for closing the account once the estate is settled (we read that from the form’s code, as it runs by script). | |
| Online enquiry form | Send us an enquiryA general contact route, not given for telling them about a death. Their contact page says they aim to answer an enquiry within 2 working days. | |
| SignVideo (British Sign Language video relay) | Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pmA general service for British Sign Language users, not given for telling them about a death. Their Priority Services Register page says British Gas has partnered with SignVideo to offer a Video Relay service for BSL users, free to use. Their extra-support page says BSL users can connect to an interpreter and communicate with British Gas advisors for free. |
These products have their own teams and numbers. Where each number was read is in the Sources list at the foot of this page.
Keep one line per call. If anything goes wrong later, this is what you will be asked for.
Every organisation that usually needs telling, with a line for the date and reference of each. No account, no email needed.
Rather have it by email?
Take the notification checklist with you.
We'll email you the notification checklist as a PDF — for when you're at a printer, or to pass to the person who'll need it. The download above stays free either way.
Their page says you do not need to have everything ready. You can get started and send a meter reading later.
The first screen of their online form asks “What is your relationship to the deceased?” and offers two answers: “I am the executor, administrator, or working with a solicitor to manage the estate” and “I am a relative or friend notifying you on behalf of someone else” (read on the form’s first screen in a browser, 16 October 2026). If you choose the second, it shows: “We’ll need the person managing the estate to get in touch. We can help with updating the account details. However we need the person managing the customer’s affairs or someone who will continue living at the property to contact us.”
Their FAQ says standing charges are still payable until the account is closed, even if no energy is being used at the property.
For a vacant property, their online form’s confirmation screen (we read its text from its code, as it runs by script) says: "We’ll temporarily put the account on hold. You’ll still receive bills and statements but you won’t need to pay these until the estate is settled.“ and ”We’ll contact you again in about seven months for an update." Their bereavement page’s own timeline says they will only contact you if they need anything else.
Their FAQ says that once the account has been closed to an accurate meter reading, they automatically refund any credit balance. If the final balance is more than £250 in credit, they ask you to contact them so they can arrange to receive a copy of the death certificate to complete the refund (read on their bereavement page in a browser, 16 October 2026).
If you have already told British Gas and bills still arrive in the wrong name, contact them.
For a HomeCare agreement, their FAQ says to let them know using their online form, and they will update the details for all services at the property.
A separate online meter reading form is on their page. The form’s own page says they will update your account within 48 hours. Their meter help page says a family bereavement is one of the times they still need readings from a smart meter.
Their bereavement page only mentions Pay As You Go meters in a link to help with reading one. It does not say how a prepayment account is closed or which number to use. Their contact page gives customers with a prepayment meter a different advisers' number (see other teams).
If the property has solar panels or another renewable installation and British Gas makes Feed-in Tariff or export payments for it, email its Smart Export Guarantee or Feed-in Tariff team (see other teams).
Their contact page says calls are recorded for training and monitoring purposes.
After you tell them, British Gas says it will update its records and check the account. If needed, it will close the account or help transfer it. It says it will only contact you if it needs anything else, and will confirm once the changes have been made.
Their Priority Services Register page lists a recent bereavement among the reasons you can join the register.
An older British Gas help article, “Arranging someone’s energy account after they’ve passed away”, is still served at an old address, but its public address now redirects to their bereavement page. It gave a postal address (a PO Box in Rotherham) and a phone number. Their current bereavement page gives neither, so we do not give them here.
Bereavement page, 'Give us a call' card: The bereavement page says to call Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm if you want to check anything or give more information.
Contact page for Direct Debit or Pay on Receipt customers, and emergencies page: The contact page lists the same number for speaking to an advisor, open Mon - Fri 8am - 6pm and Saturday 9am - 2pm. Their emergencies page also gives the same number for meter emergencies and says those lines are open 24/7 (meter emergencies only, not bereavement calls).
Both are British Gas’s own. Read on 16 October 2026. If it matters to you, ask British Gas which applies.
British Gas is not on GOV.UK’s list of organisations Tell Us Once notifies.
Tell Us Once does not tell banks, mortgage providers, insurance providers, companies the person had contracts with (such as utility companies, landlords or housing associations), or personal or workplace pension schemes other than the public sector ones it contacts. GOV.UK says you will need to contact organisations like these yourself, and lists other things you may also need to do: update the property records if the person owned land or property; contact DVLA if they owned a vehicle and you sell it, or keep it and tax it in your own name; contact HMRC if they owed business taxes like VAT; contact the Student Loans Company if they had a student loan; and contact DWP if a child or baby has died and you get benefits as their parent or carer.
Tell Us Once is available only if the person was living in England, Scotland or Wales. GOV.UK says it cannot be used if the person was living in Northern Ireland when they died, or living abroad permanently when they died.
Read from GOV.UK on 16 October 2026.
How Tell Us Once worksEvery route here was read from British Gas’s own pages on 16 October 2026, not from a directory or a search result. If this page and British Gas’s own page ever disagree, believe theirs.
SONAR is our own watch over the figures and links this site publishes. It can flag a change; it cannot edit this page. A person re-reads British Gas’s page and re-dates it.
