| British Sign Language | Convo (free BSL interpreter)Their Convo page describes a free British Sign Language interpreter, available when their phone lines are open, that you can use at no extra cost if you currently hold one of their products (it lists car, home, life and health insurance, savings and investments, pensions, equity release and lifetime care). Their life insurance FAQs say that if you do not meet the criteria there are other ways to contact them. Neither page says whether someone telling them about a death can use it. |
These products have their own teams and numbers. Where each number was read is in the Sources list at the foot of this page.
Keep one line per call. If anything goes wrong later, this is what you will be asked for.
Letters to tell a bank, building society, insurer or pension provider about a death, ready to fill in. No account, no email needed.
A blank to fill in yourself. Not legal advice. Written for England and Wales.

Their page has no single form. It lists nine types of policy, each with its own “Notify us” button: life insurance, pension and retirement, annuity, health, equity release, investments, motor, home and travel.
Their page says you can fill in a notification form on their website or phone them and they will take the details over the phone.
Equity release: the equity release button opens the same form as life insurance. Their page says that form is for life insurance policyholders and equity release customers.
Their page warns that if they cannot confirm your identity there are policy details they will not share, though they will still do everything they can to support you.
The bereavement line is an 03 number. Their page says calls to 03 numbers are charged at national call rates and are usually included in inclusive minutes on landlines and mobiles. Calls may be recorded or monitored. The line is closed at weekends and on bank holidays.
Life insurance: once you send their form, their page says a member of their claims team will be in touch to say what happens next. Their FAQs say that once they have agreed to pay the claim and have everything they need, they aim to pay out within 5 working days. An article of theirs says that once they have agreed to pay the claim and have everything they need, payment can take as little as a week. Their FAQs also say how long it takes varies.
Life insurance held in trust: their FAQs say they pay the claim to the trustees, provided there is at least one surviving trustee, so they do not need to wait for personal representatives to be appointed.
Where the money goes: their article says payments are made to joint policyholders, trustees or personal representatives, depending on how the policy was set up and whether it was held in trust.
Interim certificate: they can accept a coroner’s interim death certificate, but their FAQs say they will usually need to ask the coroner for more information, and you may need to wait until the inquest is complete before they can assess a death claim.
Policies from AIG Life Limited or Aviva Protection UK Limited (policy numbers usually start with P followed by 9 numbers): their guide says the GP report and any information you have given them is normally processed within 5 working days, and that if the claim is approved you will be paid within a further 5 working days. It says a GP can take a few weeks to reply. These can be told about on 0345 600 6815 (see other teams).
Pensions: once you send their pension form, their page says a member of their claims team will be in touch with you or the beneficiary. They say pension claims are usually paid at the discretion of Aviva as the scheme administrator. If the person who died, or you, have an address outside the UK, their page says you cannot use the online form and gives a number and an email address to use instead (see other teams).
Annuity: their form asks for a client number (starts with a C followed by numbers) or a policy number (up to three letters followed by numbers). They warn they may not be in touch with you if there is an executor or a spousal benefit on the policy.
Motor and home: their pages say they typically reply to the form within 24 hours. If you are not the executor, the motor policyholder form, the home forms and the home page ask you to phone instead (numbers in other teams). The home page says the policy usually remains active but asks you to tell them as soon as possible, and to say if no one is living in the property.
Motor and home policy numbers: if the number starts with 72 or 73, the death forms tell you to use other help pages instead of the form (the motor forms name Aviva, Aviva Gold and Aviva Platinum; the home forms name Aviva Online and Aviva Premium). If it starts with MTM, MTH or AVP, the death forms tell you to contact them instead. Their motor and home support pages, which are not the death forms, explain the prefixes. For a policy bought directly through Aviva, MMV, MOT, MMO, CVM, HPI, VAN or BRK is Aviva Signature motor, MHO, CVH or HOM is Aviva Signature home, and MTM, MTH or AVP is AvivaPlus. For a policy bought through a price comparison website, 72 is Aviva, Aviva Gold or Aviva Platinum motor, AZC is Aviva Zero motor, and 73 is an Aviva, Aviva Gold or Aviva Platinum home policy.
Health and travel: the “Notify us” button for health opens their general health insurance enquiry form (they aim to reply within 5 working days). The travel button opens the Aviva Signature travel insurance enquiries form (they aim to reply within 24 hours). Neither of those pages mentions a death.
If the person had cover through an employer (group protection), their pages say the employer, anyone from the company or the financial adviser can submit the claim. Their death-claim form page says a group protection claim needs a different form from the personal life insurance one.
If you have more than one policy, their motor and home forms ask whether other policies need updating.

Aviva is not on GOV.UK’s list of organisations Tell Us Once notifies.
Tell Us Once does not tell banks, mortgage providers, insurance providers, companies the person had contracts with (such as utility companies, landlords or housing associations), or personal or workplace pension schemes other than the public sector ones it contacts. GOV.UK says you will need to contact organisations like these yourself, and lists other things you may also need to do: update the property records if the person owned land or property; contact DVLA if they owned a vehicle and you sell it, or keep it and tax it in your own name; contact HMRC if they owed business taxes like VAT; contact the Student Loans Company if they had a student loan; and contact DWP if a child or baby has died and you get benefits as their parent or carer.
Tell Us Once is available only if the person was living in England, Scotland or Wales. GOV.UK says it cannot be used if the person was living in Northern Ireland when they died, or living abroad permanently when they died.

How Tell Us Once worksOne free online notification tells the member organisations you choose, at the same time.
Aviva is not on the Death Notification Service’s own list of members, so the service cannot tell Aviva for you. Read from its member list on 16 October 2026.
Notification only. Each member you choose updates its records and tells you the next steps. The service’s own FAQ says to expect that within 10 working days where a member holds a live account, and that a member holding no account will not write back.
