A memory book that's actually kept

Most memory books start as a weekend project and stop there. One missed session, and the folder sits unfinished for years.

There's a lighter way — capture one memory at a time, whenever it occurs to you, kept sealed with the rest of your household's records instead of waiting for a big finished project.

This page covers: why the traditional version stalls · what's live today · where it's kept, and what it's meant to become.

§1

Why the traditional version stalls

A memory book is usually framed as one big project. A full life story, written or recorded in a single sitting, with everyone free at the same time. That's a lot to ask, and it only takes one missed session for the whole thing to stop — often for good.

It needs a big block of time

A weekend, a long call, a full afternoon — hard to schedule, easy to postpone.

It's framed as one finished thing

Not "a memory," but "the whole story" — a much bigger task, started less often.

One gap and it stops

Miss the session, lose the momentum. Most unfinished memory books are unfinished for exactly this reason.

§2

A lighter way — capture as you go

A sealed message doesn't ask for a finished story. Write a few lines, or record a couple of minutes, whenever a memory surfaces — a smell, a photograph, a conversation that brings something back. Kept exactly as written or spoken, no editing session required, no deadline to hit.

Write it or say it

A short letter, or a recorded voice/video note — held exactly as given, never rewritten.

Add what goes with it

A photograph or a document can travel alongside a message as part of the same sealed bundle.

Want to prompt someone else's stories, rather than write your own — a parent's, told in their own words? That's a separate capability we're building, not live yet.

§3

Where it's kept, and what it's meant to become

Every memory you write or record is held with the rest of your records — the same place as your will and your Trusted Persons — released through the same handover, to the person you name.

Over time, those records are meant to bind into The Household Annual, your household's own bound book, alongside its other records. That's the coming renewal object — nothing to buy today, and nothing this page promises on a date.

FAQ

Common questions

01Is there a physical memory book I can buy today?

Not yet. What's live today is the record itself — sealed messages, written or recorded whenever you have something worth keeping. A household's own bound book, The Household Annual, is the coming renewal object those records are meant to feed into — nothing to buy yet, and nothing promised on a date.

02Why do most memory book projects stall?

Usually the same reason: it's framed as one big project — a weekend everyone has to be free for, a full life story written in one sitting. Miss that window and it rarely restarts. A record built a little at a time, whenever a memory surfaces, doesn't have that failure point.

03Can I add photos, or just text?

Both. A sealed message can be written or recorded as audio or video, with an enclosure — a photograph, for instance — travelling alongside it as part of the same sealed bundle.

04Do I have to do it all in one sitting?

No — that's the point of the difference. Write or record one memory when it occurs to you, then leave it. There's no session to finish and no deadline to miss.

05I want to capture my parent's stories, not just write my own — is that different?

Yes, and it's a separate capability we're building — a way to ask a question and have your parent answer in their own voice, kept exactly as spoken. It isn't live yet.

06Where is a memory kept once it's written or recorded?

With the rest of your records — the same place as your will and your Trusted Persons — released through the same handover, to the person you name.
