Families do not break only because documents are missing. They break because authority is unclear. Two siblings who both believe they should be making the decisions. A solicitor who waits because no one named has called. A neighbour who has the keys but does not know who to give them to. A bank that needs an instruction but cannot find an instructor.
This register is the single page that resolves who outranks whom and in what order. It does not replace the will, the LPAs, or the Letter Pack. It names the escalation order, the authority basis for each role, and the dispute rule for when family members disagree.
What this register is, and is not. This is a routing map, not a legal instrument. The will and the LPAs confer legal authority. This register tells the rest of the family how that authority is meant to flow in practice, who is the first call for which category of decision, and how disagreements are resolved before they escalate.
Legal authority — the named instruments
Executors of the will: the named primary executor and their substitute. Attorneys under the LPAs: primary and substitute for each LPA type (Property & Financial Affairs; Health & Welfare). Basis: record the instrument reference, the date, and where the original is held. What they can do: a one-sentence description of the scope of each authority.
Guardians of any minor children: named primary guardian and substitute. Authority triggers: the specific conditions under which each authority activates — LPA attorneys act on incapacity; executors act on death; guardians act on both parents being deceased or incapacitated.
